Why Attending a College Open House is Important to Your Success

Sure, you can visit a college website or call for information, but visiting a college during an Open House will give you the benefit of getting the feel of the campus, meeting Financial Aid, Student Services, and Admissions Counselors who can help give you direction and get you started on your college career.  Often, Program Managers are available to answer any specific questions you may have.  Here are some additional reasons you should attend an Open House:

College Programs
“Not to know is bad; not to wish to know is worse.” African Proverb

Most colleges have a complete listing of program offerings on their website, complete with program descriptions, curricula, and admission criteria.  There is no better way to decide if a program is right for you than to visit an Open House to speak to Program Managers about job outlook, workforce trends, industry growth, qualifications, and field specialties.  You can also find out about admission requirements for the program you are interested in, and even take a placement test.  Visiting an Open House is a great way to find your passion and what it will take to be successful!

Financial Aid
“An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest.” Benjamin Franklin

Paying for college can be a huge concern.  Fortunately, there are many options available to students from all financial backgrounds.  By attending an Open House, you can have some of your questions answered by Financial Aid Counselors.  Open Houses also have information about how to apply for Scholarships, and even merit based Scholarship testing!  Understanding your options help relieve the anxiety of paying for college.

Student Services
“The important thing is not to stop questioning; curiosity has its own reason for existing.” – Albert Einstein

Students Services is a vital component of the educational experience offering a wide range of resources and services.  At an Open House, you will be able to find out the types of services your college offers, and get to know some of the Counselors.  They typically help with tutoring, enrichment opportunities, internships, career services, college transfer and more.

Transfer
“Knowledge has a beginning but no end.” Geeta S. Iyengar

Transfer agreements can be tricky to understand, so being able to ask questions is important.  Open Houses usually have information about the college’s transfer or articulation agreements with four-year institutions, and a Transfer Counselor available to answer questions.  Having the opportunity to understand the benefits of utilizing one of these agreements will make you feel like you just discovered a well-kept secret.  Here’s what to ask:

1.    How can I save on tuition on the first two years of college?
2.   Are transfer scholarships available?
3.   Will I loose credits that I have already earned when I transfer?
4.   Do I have to pay an application fee when I transfer?
5.   Can I get into a “good” four-year college?
